Chiang Mai is under Korea's level-1 travel advisory (exercise caution)

Korea's foreign ministry page for Thailand (checked 2026-10-30) puts Chiang Mai and most of the country at level 1 (exercise caution). Tak province is level 2; four southern border provinces and the strip within 50 km of the Cambodian border are level 3 (leave). It reports prepaid car-rental scams in Chiang Mai, so use licensed firms and check insurance; northern temperatures can drop to 5-6°C in December-January.
