  Some state schools have an enrolment scheme with a home zone. Living in zone gives an automatic right to enrol; out-of-zone places go by ballot, and temporary moves into a zone are not allowed.

  ERO reports make judgements by area (attendance, achievement, progress and more) and give no single grade. The format changed in 2026 and older reports remain, so check the date.

   In zone, enrol directly; out of zone, apply by the school's advertised deadline and wait for the ballot.

   Schools commonly ask for proof of address, identity and age (passport), visas, immunisation records and previous school records; follow the school's list.
