This guide is for parents considering a British-curriculum international school, walking through each stage from early years to university applications.

Birth to 5: EYFS

The EYFS is England's standard for birth to 5, and many British-curriculum schools use it for nursery and Reception. It covers seven areas: communication and language; personal, social and emotional development; physical development; literacy; mathematics; understanding the world; and expressive arts and design. The end-of-year assessment in the year a child turns 5 is by teacher observation, not testing.

Year groups and Key Stages

Children born 1 September to 31 August share a year. Years 1-2 are KS1, Years 3-6 KS2, Years 7-9 KS3 and Years 10-11 KS4.

In schools using Cambridge, primary covers Stages 1-6 (about ages 5-11), with Primary Checkpoint at the end of Stage 6 (usually around 11).

Ages 14-16: IGCSE

IGCSE results are graded A*-G or 9-1. The scales are aligned at three anchor points and universities say they treat both equally, though some UK universities take grade 4 and others grade 5 as the old C in maths and English, so check each university.

Ages 16-19: AS and A Level

A Level takes two years and AS Level one; A Level is graded A*-E and AS Level A-E. Cambridge offers more than 50 subjects.

UK university applications (UCAS)

For 2027 entry, Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses close on 15 October 2026; most other courses on 13 January 2027. Students can apply to five courses.

Checklist

  • Have you checked your child's British year from the birth date?
  • Do you know which exam board the school uses?
  • Have you checked the IGCSE grading scale (A*-G or 9-1)?
  • Have you linked A Level subjects to likely university courses?
  • Are UK application deadlines in your calendar?

Ask the school

  • Which IGCSE and A Level subjects are offered
  • Whether AS is offered on its own or as a step to A Level
  • How university guidance and predicted grades work

Confirm exam dates and subject offers with the school and the exam board.
