Schooling

Education: for Japanese nationals, international schools do not meet compulsory schooling

Japan's education ministry says enrolling a Japanese-national child in an international school that is not an 'Article 1' school does not fulfil the parents' compulsory schooling duty, and finishing such a school's primary section generally does not qualify a child for a Japanese public junior high. The page has no separate rule for foreign-national children. As of 2026-10-30 our directory lists 56 schools in this city (still growing).

  • Many international schools are not Article 1 schools
  • Japanese nationals: compulsory-schooling caveat
